Philip Elliott: "How dull are people when they're happy"

Mental Illness Illustration is the title of one of Philip Elliott’s albums of illustrations, which perfectly suits the paintings of this illustrator living on Australian coast. As it seemed when looking at the paintings and turned out true when communicating, he mainly draws his life, to be more precise, people in it. Representations are often bitter, honest and sometimes harsh, it is often needed to pay attention not only to the image but the titles or the captions to it.

How long have you been drawing? When and why did you decide to start it?

Since before I could walk. I've never really wanted to do anything else. I don't know why I first started drawing, it just made sense to me.

Did you attend any art schools? Do you think artists are born or tought?

Yeah, I studied animation for a few years. After going through that ordeal, I can't see myself every animating again, it destroyed my passion for it.
I recommend you don't study your hobby, it takes alot of the fun of it. Lately I've been wanting to go back to uni and do psychology, but because I'm a hypochondriac it would be very detrimental.

Do you remember the very first piece of art that you made?

I remember drawing planet Earth when I was in kindergarden, and I put a ring around it (like Saturn's ring). I remember somebody saying that Earth doesn't have an orbitting ring and I replied "of course it does, haven't you seen it? It sits behind the sun. After you look at the sun, close your eyes and it's behind your eyelids."

How much time do you usually spend for drawing?

I find the process of drawing hypnotic so I never know how long I've been doing it for.

Could you name your favorite illustrators or other artists that have influenced you?

Edward Gorey has been the biggest inspiration to me, I have a portrait of him tattooed on my arm. I'm going to sound like a dick here, but Final Fantasy VII had a massive effect on the way I viewed myself and the world I lived in and the creative side of my brain. It was the first time I was fully engrossed in something and I enjoyed it alot more than real life.

Do you often draw your friends and other people you know or there are mostly invented heroes in your drawings?

Most of my work is Semi-Autobiographical. I have to say "Semi" or I would get in trouble for the things i draw. Nothing quite like dating a girl and drawing pictures of yourself with other girls and then being asked why.

I love your series with those cute but dumpy round-headed creatures. It seems that they both would like to die and care of each other so much. Any ideas of what will happen with them further?

No, they are dead to me. I was so young when I did those, but I think it is something I will always be remembered for. Which isn't awful, I suppose, I just don't feel like the same person who did them.

Are u assigned into some projects? Like books’ illustration etc.

I'm making alot of stickers at the moment! And i'm working on a book on pedophiles.

What do you do in your everyday life besides drawing?

I have alot of seizures, I collect audiobooks and play too much Fallout 3.
I have slight agoraphobia so I have anxiety about doing alot of things. I really like routine and repitition.

How do you like the place where u live (i.e. city, country)?

I've had to move back in with my mother for a little bit while my health isn't great, which is sort of a step backwards in my life, but I wasn't looking after myself. My mother is currently building me an art studio as an extension to her house, which I'm so fucking psyched about. I live in the rainforest on the coast of Australia, I can see the sea.

What was your favorite book as a child?

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I have "Don't Panic" tattooed on my wrist.

Which music sounds lately in your headphones/speakers?

Mewithoutyou, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, The Pogues, Say Anything, Captain Chaos, the Decemberests, Neutral Milk Hotel and Woody Guthrie.

Have ever thought of quitting the drawing?

Everyday. I'm sure my family would like it if I gave it all up and got a normal job.

Why so many cruel and obscene drawings? Why not cute and sweet ones?

Seriously? How dull are people when they're happy, dude?

Do you have any associations with the word "Ukraine"?

"Migrain."
No, I know nothing about Ukraine.
